Highlights

  • World of Warcraft is introducing Arfus, a popular ghostly dog pet inspired by the Lich King, in both Classic and retail versions of the game.
  • Arfus has two different models, one for Wrath of the Lich King Classic and another for Dragonflight, with the latter being of higher quality.
  • Players can obtain Arfus through specific achievements and in-game events, and he can be used as a battle pet in mini-game encounters throughout World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is finally making Arfus, the iconic ghostly dog inspired by the Lich King, available for players to collect. This new pet will be obtainable in both Wrath of the Lich King Classic and retail World of Warcraft.

Arfus is an adorable spectral pup first seen in Hearthstone’s Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion. Since then, he has made several other appearances in Hearthstone, and though he had not appeared in World of Warcraft up until now, the Classic WoW admitted that Arfus was the unofficial mascot for the development team.

Now, the ghostly good boy is finally becoming a pet that players can earn in both Classic and retail World of Warcraft. The pet has two different models; a low-resolution one for Wrath of the Lich King, and a high-fidelity counterpart for Dragonflight. Arfus is also a battle pet of the Undead variety, so players can level him up and use him in the Pokemon-like mini-game encounters throughout World of Warcraft.

The Wrath of the Lich King Classic version of Arfus is given to players who earn a new meta achievement for completing every Defense Protocol Gamma dungeon in the upcoming Fall of the Lich King update. The method for unlocking Arfus in Dragonflight is tied to a Feat of Strength achievement fittingly called The Lick King. It seems the unlock will be associated with the Hallow’s End holiday refresh in World of Warcraft Patch 10.2, but the exact further details are currently not known.

Fall of the Lich King is the final major patch and raid season for Wrath of the Lich King Classic. There are some more minor patches, including the one that adds the Ruby Sanctum to the game, but the nostalgic servers are slowly reaching the end of the popular expansion pack’s life cycle. Players don’t know if Cataclysm Classic, Classic+, or something else is in store for them next, but they may find out during Blizzcon.

Dragonflight, on the other hand, is currently working on Patch 10.2, Guardians of the Dream. This major patch begins the third raid season of Dragonflight and is seemingly bringing an end to several major World of Warcraft plot arcs at once. The existence of Dragonflight Patch 10.3 is in the air right now, but like Classic, World of Warcraft players can expect to find out more at the upcoming convention.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
